We're going to look at making a brick wall texture, complete with graffiti. It's a fairly simple effect that can be largely generated in Photoshop.

One of the challenges faced by graphic designers and more advanced users of Photoshop is reality. The task of making something look very realistic if not completely real can be quite difficult. In this tutorial however we avoid the difficulty by using a very simplified method to creating realistic and effective looking clouds. Creating clouds is fairly easy to do and this tutorial explains it step by step.
Creating Realistic Clouds
The first thing we need to do is create a new document in Adobe Photoshop. Im making mine 400px wide and 180pc high although you can make yours whatever you want. Click OK.
Now when you have your document open we should, although we dont actually need to set the colour of the background so it looks like the sky. Afterall we are creating clouds so it would be fairly odd if there wasnt a sky. Set your colour to #76B0F0 which is a light blue - you can however use any other colours you want. Select everything using the Marquee Tool (or press Ctrl + A) and select the fill tool from the tools window. Then simply click on on the white document within the bounds of the selected area.
Thats the sky sorted. Now lets move on to what your here for - the clouds.
Start off with creating a new layer by going to Layer >> New Layer. Call it Clouds and click OK. On the tools window select the Paintbrush tool and apply the following settings:
Brush: 18px
Mode: Normal
Opacity: 100%
Flow: 100%;
Then just paint on a 'blob' onto your document. This will be your cloud.
Thats it your finished. Realistic isnt it!
Just joking! We now need to move away from the 'blob' look and turn it more into the clouds look. This is done by using the Smudge tool which is on your tools window. Simply click and drag to smudge the edges of your clouds. You should use a variety of brush sizes when doing this so that it looks more natural and is spread out better. You should end up with something like:
Were almost done. Now by now it should look like clouds if not then simply do more smudging and try to get rid of all of the rough edges so it all looks very smooth. Also try to make sure that your cloud isnt just an oval or an exact shape - its not very often that you look up and see a perfect triangular cloud is it ;).
To make it that bit more effective however we need to change the opacity of the clouds layer. This lets some of the blue come through the clouds and fades them out a bit. To do this on the layer window, make sure that the Clouds layer is selected and just above you will see a percentage option for Opacity. Im using 45% although it all depends on what you think looks best. If you want some clouds to be more visible than others simply create them on a different layer and set the opacity to a slightly higher percentage. I dont recommend having it aove 90% though.
Heres what I came up with:
Have fun with your new skills!

I'd like to show you a technique on how to vectorize from a photo reference in Photoshop. Often, Photoshop's vector capabilities are quickly shot down by those familiar with true vector programs, like Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, or Macromedia Freehand. And, yes, Photoshop's vector shapes is by no means a figurehead in comparison, but what tools are available offer no real limitation as to what they can do.
