Virtually every Flash web site ever created has a menu of some sort in it. Most are quite simple, possibly just a row of buttons. Others, however, are more complex, offering not just buttons but also incorporating submenus via drop-down as well. That's what this tutorial will focus on, a drop-down menu. But not any drop-down menu. No. The menu created here will be driven by one (or more) external XML files which, when read into Flash, will determine the makeup and behavior of that menu. Something like the following.

A common problem I face when using new programming languages inside a familiar programming environment such as Flash is that I am overwhelmed by the new syntax and creative workarounds that help both languages communicate with each other. Flash and XML are no exceptions. If you are in the same category as me, this tutorial was designed with you in mind. If you aren't in the same category...well, you will probably still like this tutorial!
This tutorial will help you to create a simple, straightforward example that does not deviate into extraneous functions, efficient coding methods, etc. If this is your first time trying to create something using XML in Flash, I believe it is better for you to build your confidence and create a simple, working example and then modify that example with increasingly complex features that make your work more presentable

It is time for another photo gallery tutorial! This one is a little more advanced than the other photo gallery tutorial on this site. So, now, what would make me write another tutorial on a topic that has already been covered? The answer is easier maintenance! In the earlier photo gallery tutorial, if you wanted to add an extra image, you had to manually edit the FLA file and add the image's name to the array. That usually requires a few more steps such as uploading a new SWF and a possible renaming the file and embed paths to avoid browser caching.
In this version, if you want to add another image to your photo gallery, all you have to do is edit an XML file. Your photo gallery automatically incorporates your addition without you having to even touch the FLA. In the long run, you may find that the time you save in adding or editing existing images is worth more than your time in going through this tutorial. Plus, this version of the tutorial accommodates captions for your images. Everybody loves captions

There are several tutorials in this site that cover how to load data from an external location. But, there are no tutorials on this site that discuss how to format and process your data for any use greater than displaying them as a string in a textField.
Unlike XML data which can be formatted extensively in Flash using Flash's own built-in accessors, the data I will focus on will be for less structured output that you would encounter most when loading variables from a text file or simple PHP scripts

In this tutorial, you'll learn
- The basics of XML
- How to select an XML editor
- How to create XML documents
- How to view XML documents
Similar to HTML, XML is a technology that is best understood by working with it. I could go on and on for pages about the philosophical ramifications of XML, but in the end I'm sure you just want to know what you can do with it. Most of your XML work will consist of developing XML documents, which are sort of like HTML web pages, at least in terms of how the code is generally structured.
